Mideast Quartet gives Israel, Palestinians 'wakeup call'

Buildings under construction in the Israeli settlement of Har Homa, in annexed east JerusalemA much-awaited report by the Middle East diplomatic quartet should serve as a “wakeup call” to Israel to halt the expansion of settlements and to the Palestinians to renounce violence, the UN envoy said Thursday. Nickolay Mladenov said ongoing Israeli construction in the West Bank was one of three “negative trends” that must be quickly reversed to keep the hope of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal alive. Violence and incitement, settlements and the Palestinian Authority’s lack of control over the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip “severely undermine hopes for peace,” Mladenov said.

U.S. sailors detained by Iran spoke too much under interrogation: Navy

FILE PHOTO - An undated picture released by Iran's Revolutionary Guards website shows American sailors sit in an unknown place in IranBy Yeganeh Torbati and Idrees Ali WASHINGTON (Reuters) – American sailors who were detained by Iran in January gave away too much information to their captors and were seized in the Gulf following a series of missteps by the crew and their superiors, the U.S. Navy said in a report on Thursday. The report said some of the 10 crew members, detained at gunpoint Jan. 12 by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), had revealed sensitive information, such as phone and laptop passwords, to the Iranians. At the time of their capture, an international incident that rattled nerves days before the implementation of a nuclear accord between Iran and world powers, the sailors were in transit in two vessels from Kuwait to Bahrain.

In Egypt, Sisi's star fades as problems pile up

Sisi speaks at Al-Asmarat district in Al Mokattam areaHisham Genena, Egypt’s erstwhile corruption tsar, settles in a corner. “We can speak freely.” It has been a long way down for Genena, a former policeman and judge who was appointed to head Egypt’s corruption watchdog in 2012 and is now on trial, accused of defaming the state by exaggerating the scale of public sector graft. “When political parties are absent, NGOs are absent, local media is being crushed, international media too… is that a sign of a healthy environment in which a country can flourish?” Three years after general-turned-president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ousted the Muslim Brotherhood, a crackdown that first targeted opposition activists has now turned on establishment figures like Genena to TV presenters and street performers.
