Media Monitoring during the presidential elections and the handover of power in Egypt

Preface

Media like a fire which could be used in industry and serving the human beings or it could be used to harm them. Media could also help in the democratic development, increase the awareness and shape the public opinion or mislead, spread hate or incite the public opinion to it.

Hence and as the media in all of its forms – visual, read, audio and electronic- had played a pivotal role in the Arab revolutions, and as most the media-outlets supported the democracy advocates in the six revolutions “Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Libya and Syria” while some media-outlets were confused before the success and the accomplishments of these revolutions;

As the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) and the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR), believe in the important role of the media, especially after the 25th January revolution;

Both organizations monitored the performance of ten media-outlets during the transition period, after the SCAF came to power following the ousting of the President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Today both organizations monitor the performance of the media during the following stages:

First: the stage of the presidential election that took place in the months of May-June 2012 which included five satellite channels and ten newspapers.

Second: After the completion of the presidential election which included ten websites, four religious satellite channels and five sports satellite channels.

As we announce this report regarding the monitoring results over four months “from May to August”, we hope it could contribute to the media, which we have monitored or others, in order to avoid the negatives and support the professional and credible media that contribute to the support of democracy through the transitional phase in Egypt.
