The Spectacular Opening Night of Piel Del Toro in the Avenues

tnwpdto-001-1

Last week I received a velvety purple invitation with a golden bull embossed on its cover. It was an invitation to attend the opening ceremony of the new Spanish fashion store, Piel Del Toro, in the Avenues. The invitation and the opening event were a product of Circus BC ’s creativity and I knew I wouldn’t want to miss it. I was right indeed.

tnwpdto-001

On the night of the opening, which was last Wednesday, I was in the Grand Avenues at 7 P.M. sharp when I heard the fuss and the Ole cries followed by music. It was the “Toro” march where a wooden bull was paraded in the Grand Avenues all the way and bull fighters went in circles around it as if they are fighting it. Many people thought that the march would include a real live bull but thank god it didn’t or I would’ve ran the opposite way all the way to Ikea!

The Toro March ended at the little secluded courtyard in the Soku district which was sealed off and by invitation only for the night.

There was live music playing and spanish dancing, clapping, and a lot of Olé’s!

Groovy!? – Yeaaaa!

DSC01844

It’s been a while since I got my groove on but luckily for me, Crocs was kind enough to provide enough groove for all of us last night! At the Grand Avenues, Crocs hosted a retro event which, for me, was a home-run in all aspects.
So what exactly is retro? – reviving the styles and especially the fashions of the past: fashionably nostalgic or old-fashioned.

And that is exactly what was going down at the Crocs store last night with their 70’s theme!

The 1970s, was a decade that saw many diverse forms of music funk and psychedelic rock and medleys and sketches that aired on local TV. It was also the birth of movies and plays that are still groovy to date such as, Saturday Night Fever and local play “The Salmiya Bachelor” starring Kuwaiti star Abdulhussain Abdulredha. Not to forget, the funky fashion in the 70s that flaunted bell-bottoms, afros, sequins, loud prints and the androgynous hippie look.
DSC01835

The 70’s-themed retro event was held to take us back to the 70s era of funky designs and vintage-themed outfits which was the inspiration behind the iconic Crocs Retro Collection.
DSC01829

The new Crocs Retro Collection is created for the fans of the original clog as well as a more fashion-conscious audience drawn to the funky vintage feel. The Retro Collection keeps true to the signature comfort of Croslite material and at the same time, the retro styles gives the shoes a sporty, performance driven feel.
DSC01831

Crocs products are sold in over 90 countries. Every day, millions of Crocs™ shoe lovers around the world enjoy the exceptional form, function, versatility and feel-good qualities of these shoes while at work, school and play.

10 Steps that Helped Me Sleep at Night

inastmi

In the summer of 2011 I became an insomniac. I’ve battled forever with my Alarm clock, the snooze button became my best friend and I was always waking up too late. My having a late start the first thing in the morning cast an unwelcome hue of irritation on the remainder of my day which made me both jittery and unhappy. I’ve tried my best to fix my sleeping patterns trying various things, I’ve even published a post asking for help (here) and I can finally say I’m now able to sleep at night, no pills and no potions necessary. My solution works for me and might not work for everyone and there are a bunch of factors involved but here it is, I hope this helps.

1- Lose the coffee: Being a heavy coffee drinker I used to drink a big fat cup of coffee then go to sleep back in the day. Sadly, I seem to have used up my supply of caffeine-enduring cells and now its time to act responsibly. I switched to decaf and found that even with decaf coffee I cannot sleep. With some trial and error, I realised the cut off time for my coffee drinking should be at 12:30 – 1 P.M. If I drink anything after, especially turkish coffee, I won’t be able to sleep. Tea however is still fine all day long which I’m thankful for.

2- Have an early light dinner: if I eat a heavy dinner I won’t be able to sleep properly and I will have a harder time waking up in the morning. My dinner should be done with two hours before my bedtime. Interestingly, I discovered that if I don’t eat bread/pasta/rice/potatoes for dinner, I wake up much easier in the morning! That’s something to ponder…

3- Set a bedtime, and cherish it: You need to sleep for six hours so you’d wake up normally. Start with the time you need to wakeup, take an hour more for bedtime rituals, and you will have a bedtime or a cut-off time for all other activities that keep you awake.

4- No bedtime reading: In my youth I used to read until I fell asleep. I discovered that on the nights I read something in bed, I don’t fall asleep and if I do, I can’t wake up. Probably because while I’m reading my mind is working on high gear and I need my mind to doze off. No more bedtime reading during the weekdays :(

5- No instagram, whatsapp, or Twitter: For some reason I noticed that all the social media action happens the moment I’m about to fall asleep! Either a fight or a juicy piece of news that everyone needs to discuss. Apparently I live in a community of insomniacs! Anyway, an hour before my bedtime I simply turn off my iPhone. Everything can wait till morning, I need my sleep.

6- No TV either: Why is it that the best of TV is only aired after ten? The best movies or the interesting talk shows? I’m not sure but I’ve gotten into the habit of switching off the TV, no questions asked, when its my bedtime. A good show will be shown again tomorrow or, if not, you can always record it. My sleep is more important than TV.

7- Bedtime Rituals: You should have a bedtime rituals and perform them routinely. It differs from one person to the next but mine include brushing my teeth, taking off my lenses, switching all unused electric outlets off, and using moisterizers to battle old age signs.

8- Fresh clean sheets and fluffy scented pillows: There is nothing like slipping into a well made bed with clean cold soft sheets, when you are all tucked in snugly you take a whiff and smell the scents that make you happy -mine are rosewater and oud- you will feel a big surge of happiness. Its time to enjoy your sleep.

9- Listen to soothing sounds: When I’m all done with my bed rituals, I switch off the light and use my sound generating machine from OSIM (post). My favorites are the ocean waves or the thunderstorm sounds. I keep it playing for half an hour as I drift-off into a peaceful relaxing sleep. My sleep quality has improved greatly with this step. You can buy the machine at OSIM store in the Grand Avenues or you can download an app or put anything else you think will help.

10- The Sleep Cycle app:  This app on my iPhone was an enormous help in the days when my sleeping patterns were all over the place. It chooses the best time to wake you up by calculating your sleep phases rather than just wake you up at a given time and calculated the quality of your sleep and how long did you spend in bed. It also wakes you up with your favorite songs and currently its the Song of the Lonely mountain from the hobbit :) The app is my savior and I highly recommend you start with it. You can find it here (link).

Try these steps together and by god’s will they will work. I’ve been sleeping and waking up normally for a couple of months straight now and I’ve never been happier or calmer. I wake up feeling my life is in order again and I can begin to take control,  I might even be going on a diet soon. Sleeping right felt like the first puzzle piece falling in place to the rest of the map of my life, you deserve to feel that serene goodness as well.

This post is dedicated to all my former fellow insomniacs, especially Chill Pill Box and Doona :)

Ben’s Cookies at Grand Avenues!

DSC01632

“Think what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about three o’clock every afternoon and then lay down on our blankets for a nap.” – Barbara Jordan

I kept hearing about Ben’s Cookies and was waiting its arrival in Kuwait. The shop is located at Grand Avenues and I found it really classy due to its red and white décor. But I didn’t go there for the décor! The cookies are to-die-for!

I am not a big fan of sweets, but these cookies are just perfect. With their chewy interior, crunchy edges, and well blended flavors; you won’t be able to eat just one! Instead of going in to pick just one cookie and try it, I ended up buying a dozen and not sharing! I had one of each but my personal favorite was the “Ginger Dark Chocolate Chunk.”

I would definitely recommend for all sweet-tooth, cookie lovers to go try Ben’s cookies as it was by far, hands-down the best cookie I ever had in my life.

Dinner at Véranda of Harvey Nichols

davohn-032-1

I was invited to try the soon to be opened Véranda restaurant in Harvey Nichols yesterday. The invitation was set for 7 P.M. and on 7 P.M. on the dot I was standing outside of Harvey Nichols in the Grand Avenues. Véranda’s entrance is through an elevator/staircase at the rightmost section of Harvey from the outside.

davohn-007-1-2

We chose to go up the the mirror walled staircase to the waiting area where we were greeted warmly, served juice cocktails, and led to a table.

davohn-006-1-2

We chose a table overlooking the Grand Avenues walkway through the balcony or veranda. We could see people but we were hidden from view. The location and view are excellent.

davohn-034-1

davohn-038-1

The restaurant’s interior is gorgeous: all white, beige, and very modern with protruding waves on the ceiling and walls. Elegant but modern and not at all stuffy.

davohn-030-1

davohn-039-1

The restaurant is also very big with lots of different seating areas but the best ones in my opinion are the ones overlooking the Grand Avenues walkway.

davohn-036-1

davohn-037-1

davohn-033-1

After a quick tour to photograph the restaurant, we settled down on our table with our juices waiting for dinner. The juices were good, fresh, and unsweetened.

davohn-010-1

Next came the bread basket with the butter. Véranda serves freshly baked bread made in their kitchen on daily basis.

davohn-001-1

davohn-014-1

The manager of the restaurant arrived at the table and explained to us that Véranda will provide an upscale dining experience for both breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus they use organic ingredients in their dishes. The first of which came right afterwards: mini crostini with mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, and pesto sauce.

davohn-006-1

davohn-007-1

I loved the crostini, I also heard people raving about the shrimp.

davohn-008-1

The duck rolls, also highly recommended by my fellow diners.

davohn-009-1

Hummus served on top of a grilled yellow capsicum. This I can tell is is very delicious. You have to take a bite of both the Hummus and the capsicum together, I could have dined on this alone all night.

davohn-011-1

The moutabbal on top of a grilled aubergine was excellent! It is really really good and I love the presentation.

davohn-012-1

Next came the main dishes. First, a hammour fish medallion my fellow diners enjoyed very much.

davohn-019-1

Lobster ravioli.

davohn-018-1

And a plate covered with a bell-shaped glass dome served that way at the table.

davohn-015-1

When that plate is served, the waiter will take off the glass cover and lots of steam/fumes will be let loose, revealing a plate of smoked salmon. The salmon is actually cured salmon that is smoked in the fumes beneath the glass dome in the time it takes to make the journey from the kitchen to your table. Very Heston Blumenthal!

davohn-017-1

However, the star of my fellow diner’s evening was this dish. Meat cooked slowly for seven  hours and served in a gravy like sauce. I don’t know its name but I know they kept raving about it with every bite.

davohn-020-1

davohn-021-1

Vegetarian me didn’t touch the meat/fish dishes, which I’m usually used to by the way I don’t mind really. But Véranda’s chef prepared a vegetarian goats cheese tart just for me. I was touched really. Creamy goat cheese with pesto on a bed of cooked skinned tomatoes and olive tapenade all enclosed inside a flakey crunchy square of puff pastry. It was lip-smacking! I love goat’s cheese <3 Thank you Chef!

davohn-022-1

By the time we finished our main courses we were full but of course we had to try the desserts. I ordered Earl Grey White tea which is provided by Tevana in the Avenues by the way and the tea was brewed on my table for a few minutes before being poured for me to enjoy. It was very good, light, and didn’t keep me from falling asleep two hours later.

davohn-024-1

The desserts? Raspberry mille-feuille served with a side of pineapple and passion fruit compote. I adore mille-feuilles and didn’t waste any time polishing off my plate. It was fresh, creamy, and gone in a blink.

davohn-029-1

The second dessert was a thick dark chocolate mousse. The texture of the mousse was thick and as smooth as velvet. If you make it to the centre of the mousse, you will be surprised with a cherry sauce surprise. If you are a black forest cake fan, that this is the dessert for you.

davohn-028-1

By the time we were finished we didn’t want to leave, we were having too much fun people watching while enjoying the contemporary decor and the food was really good. Thank you Veranda’s team for showing us an excellent time and for your warm hospitality throughout the night. We can’t wait for Véranda to open so we can come back again. Thank you Al-Shayaa and Rawan Farhat for extending the generous invitation.

Véranda will be opening its doors to the diners tomorrow Tuesday 12 March 2013. No reservation is necessary but it is adviasable. For more information and pictures you can follow Harvey Nichols Kuwait on instagram (@HarveyNicholsKuwait).
